MORE than 500 grade 9 students of Abellana National School (ANS) joined the Reproductive Health forum dubbed as “Sama-sama Para sa Kabataan” last Friday at the ANS gym.

The Forum for Family Planning and Development Inc., a nonstock, nonprofit and nongovernment organization, organized the event to increase awareness among the poor and most vulnerable individuals, such as the night high school students, about the benefits of RH Law.

“We are concerned about the future of the youth and we are trying to make them aware about RH so that unplanned pregnancies can be prevented,” The Forum advocacy specialist Chi Laigo Vallido said.

Lyngil Olivar, one of the participants, said the forum made her aware of the Reproductive Health.

“Makatabang ang forum para makapangandam sa future, dili ma ihas and aron ma aware nga unahon ang eskwela aron makatrabaho usa magminyo kay lisud mag buhi og bata (The forum helps us prepare for our future and realize that it is important to first finish study and find a job before getting married because it’s difficult to raise a child,” Olivar said.

Topics included understanding adolescent reproductive health, and correcting myths and misconceptions by Dr. Rolando Jingle Santos of Jose Reyes Medical Center Manila, HIV/AIDS by Chi Vallido and state of youth health and responsible parenthood by Kevin de Vera, program associate of The Forum.

The project, which started on July 15, 2015, aims to institutionalize the conduct of Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (ASRH) teaching-learning programs in night high schools.

“Dinhi sa Cebu City importante nga mabutang sa agenda ang Reproductive Rights dili lang sa mga educational institutions kun dili apil na sa local government unit,” Councilor Alvin Dizon said.

The project also aims to train at least 70 teachers and student leaders on ASRH advocacy and use of the modules; sign a memorandum of agreement between the project organizers and the partner schools for the continuous conduct of ASRH orientation and learning sessions; and provide information materials on RH Law and its benefits and ASRH to at least 60 percent of night high school students in Cebu City.
