A barangay councilman and a barangay tanod died after a concrete post fell on them when a trailer truck snagged the low-lying wires connected to a utility post in Barangay Estaca, Compostela town in northern Cebu.

Police identified the fatalities as Raul Castro, a 52-year-old barangay councilman, and Bernardo Calvo, a 47-year-old barangay tanod.

PO3 Emil Rubilla of the Compostela Police Station said Castro and Calvo were trying to clear the road of low-lying wires connected to a utility post  after an unidentified truck snagged the wires an hour before the accident, causing the wires to hang low.

No one was able to get the plate number of the truck, which caused the wires to dangle precariously low across the road.

When Castro and Calvo arrived in the area, they immediately got to work to clear the road of the dangling wires.

But while the wires were being removed, a speeding trailer truck passed by, snagging the low-lying wires anew.

When the wires got snagged, Rubilla said, another concrete utility post located three meters away from the first post with the low-lying wires also got toppled and fell on the two victims.

Rubilla said the driver of the trailer truck (NUK-405), Monsanto Alejandro Pepito, 41, a resident of Tabogon, Mandaue City, claimed he didn’t notice the low-lying wires.

Pepito did not stop in the accident area, but he surrendered to the Liloan Police Station.

He said he didn’t stop after the incident for fear of getting lynched.

Rubilla said the 40-foot trailer truck of 2GO was carrying meat products and was on its way to Cebu City.

Calvo died on the spot. Castro died about five hours after he was brought to the Mendero Medical Center in Consolacion town.

Police said the two victims suffered severe head injuries.

Pepito, the truck driver, was  detained pending the filing of charges of reckless imprudence resulting to double homicide.
