CCSC to push through with expanded grassroots sports training program

THE GRASSROOTS sports development program of the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) has just gotten bigger.

In its bid to discover athletes who will represent the city in various tournaments, CCSC, headed by Edward Hayco, has tied up with the Department of Education (DepEd)-Cebu City Division for its Expanded Grassroots Sports Training Program.

The program, which begins at the start of the school year this June, will serve as a continuation of CCSC’s highly successful Summer Grassroots Sports Training Program.

Hayco had a meeting with Dr. Bianito Dagatan, chief of DepEd-Cebu City Division to discuss the matter.

“How successful this program would be, I am not sure. This is just 10 percent of the whole program that we want to implement. But at least, we were able to plant the seeds,” said Hayco.

There will be 21 sports disciplines to learn under the program.

SPORTS SHOPPING

CCSC will be targeting 25 public schools in Cebu City that will serve as training venues.

“We came up with this program because we noticed that after the summer sports training program, the athletes became stagnant. We decided to make this a whole year-round program so the learning will be continuous,” said Hayco.

“We will nurse the pupils from being entry levels to intramural, city meet, division meet and Palarong Pambansa athletes,” said Hayco.

The program will feature “sports shopping,” where at least five sports disciplines will be taught in one venue.

“Sports shopping will make the training more enjoyable and the participants will get a chance to cross train,” said Hayco.

The program will be handled by volunteer coaches, who are members of Team Cebu City.
