TRAFFIC congestion is expected to worsen with the opening of classes in private and public schools today especially in Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu where there are ongoing repairs on the Mandaue-Mactan bridge.
The City Traffic Management System (CTMS) of Lapu-Lapu and Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (Team) will field traffic personnel in areas near schools to direct traffic.
Florentino Nimor Jr., Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (Team) director, said that they will augment their 240 traffic enforcers tomorrow.
“Duha ka shifting unya we reminded them nga kun mahimo walay absent (There will be two shifts and we reminded them that as much as possible, there should be no absences.),” Nimor said.
Nimor said that during their general meeting yesterday with the traffic enforcers, he reminded them of the dos and don’ts in managing traffic.
“Unsay dapat nila buhaton kay usahay mag tan-aw ra man gud sila sa violations ba ako gyud gi-emphasize is during peak hours concentrate more on sa daloy sa sakyanan ayaw ng dakop kay dakop is only consequential mana siya incidental raman na siya sa pag manage sa traffic so focus more sa daloy sa sakyanan (Sometimes they only focus on traffic violators. I emphasized that during peak hours, they should concentrate on traffic flow, not just traffic violators because that is only incidental),” Nimor said.
Enforcers were also instructed to wear their complete uniform and bring their raincoats provided by the city so that the rains will not hamper traffic operations.
“Unya sa interventions mostly naa namay traffic lights amo silang giingnan nga you can concentrate more on assisting sa pedestrians na (And for interventions, because there are traffic lights, they can assist pedestrians),” Nimor said.
Nimor received a report from an area leader that there is an ongoing road concreting at UN Avenue which can cause traffic congestion, but he still has to verify the report.
“Naa koy concreting gi-allow sa portion ra sa padung sa Cansaga, I still have to verify kun naa ba gyud sa UN Avenue. Ngano man mo dungan (sa opening of classes) sila nga problematic man gani na daan kun walay klase?
Mao na akong i-verify (I allowed concreting on a portion going to Cansaga. I need to verify if there is in UN Avenue, why would they do it during the opening of classes when it is already problematic even during school break?)” Nimor said.
Lapu-Lapu City
In Lapu-Lapu City, Frank Brazil, chief of CTMS, said they canceled the day off of traffic enforcers today.
“Kinahanglan they will not vacate their posts especially during rush hours kinahanglan naa gyud sila nga molihok gyud sila not naa ra sila pero puro walay actions nga buhaton kailangan trabaho gyud og klaro ba (They should move and act and do their jobs),” Brazil said.
Brazil also reminded schools, especially those located near narrow streets not to allow the dropping off of students at the side of the road.
He said parents dropping off their children along the road is one of the major traffic concerns during classes and that it endangers the safety of students.
Brazil said the asphalting of the bridge is not yet completed as rains have delayed the work.
“Usa gihapon na sa problema namo heavy ang traffic tungod sa movement sa sakyanan nga mo slow down didto sa Mandaue side. Pag dulhog sa ubos, naa man gu’y expansion joint nga upat kabuok nga medjo lawom lawom pa gamay mao mo hinay ang sakyanan (This is one of our problems — traffic is heavy because the movement of vehicles slows down at the Mandaue side. Going down, there are four expansion joints that are quite deep t+hat is why vehicle movement is slow)”, Brazil said.
