THE Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) will launch a nationwide campaign to empower communities in the war against illegal drugs, corruption and criminality with inputs from Cebu province.

Dubbed as “Masa Masid” (People’s Watch), Interior and Local Government Secretary Ismael “Mike” Sueño said the program will focus on the barangays as partners in addressing problems on illegal drugs, corruption and criminality.

He was in Cebu to meet Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III, Ivy Durano-Meca of the Cebu Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Office (CPADAO), Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma and other non-government organizations to hear their best practices in the campaign against illegal drugs.

Sueño said the launching of the Masa Masid will be held in Cebu next month with President Rodrigo Duterte.

The final date and venue have yet to finalized. He said they chose the province for the launching due to the active participation and volunteerism among different sectors of the society.

Under the program, volunteers will be established in barangays to join the fight against these three top problems by helping report cases of corruption, drug use and sale and criminality within their areas.

He said the program is being done in Quezon City where they also visited and learned more about it.

Sueño said he was also impressed with a community-based rehabilitation program of the Cebu Archdiocese dubbed Ubas or the Ugnayan ng Barangay at Simbahan.
