Ayala Center Cebu to host Cinemalaya Aug. 9-14

AYALA Center Cebu is hosting for the first time entries that will compete in the 12th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival with the theme, “Break the Surface.” This is the first time that Cinemalaya is screening entries outside Luzon.

Presented by Cinemalaya Foundation and the Cultural Center of the Philippines with Ayala Malls Cinemas, Sinulog Foundation and the Local Government of Cebu, Cinemalaya will display 19 films in competition, in the Full Length Feature and Short Feature categories from August 9 to 14 at the Ayala Center Cebu Cinema 4.

This year’s film festival will open with a special program today at 5 p.m. at The Gallery. Two competition films in the full length feature category: Atom Magadia’s “Dagsin” and Vic Acedillo’s “Lando at Bugoy” will open the festival at 6:15 p.m. and 9 p.m., respectively. Directors Magadia, Acedillo and some cast members are set to fly in to interact with the audience after the screening. Movie passes for both screenings on this date will be on a first-come, first-served basis and are free to the public.

“Dagsin” and “Lando at Bugoy” are two of the nine entries that will compete for the Cinemalaya Award in the Full Length Feature category. Among the nine participating entries vying for the award are: “Ang Bagong Pamilya Ni Ponching” by Inna Miren Salazar and Dos Ocampo, “Hiblang Abo” by Ralston Jover, “I America” by Ivan Andrew Payawal, “Kusina” by David Corpuz and Cenon Palomares, “Mercury Is Mine” by Jason Paul Laxamana, “Pamilya Ordinaryo” by Eduardo Roy, Jr. and “Tuos” by Derick Cabrido.

The 10 films competing in the Short Feature Category are: “Ang Hapon Ni Nanding” (Nanding’s Afternoons) by Rommel Tolentino, “Ang Maangas, Ang Marikit at Ang Makata” by Jose Ibarra Guballa, “Bugtaw” by Noah Del Rosario, “Butas” by Richard Cawed, “Fish Out of Water” by Mon A.L. Garilao, “Forever Natin” by Cyrus Valdez, “Get Certified” by Isaias Herrera Zantua, “Mansyong Papel” by Ogos Aznar, “Nakauwi Na” by John Relano, Patrick Baleros and Luis Hidalgo, “Pektus” by Isabel Quesada. Tickets for each film will be available on the day of screening at P150 per ticket.
