A man and his son died in a drug bust operation at the Paknaan relocation site in Mandaue City past 3 a.m. yesterday.

Supt. Pedy Noval, team leader of the City Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Force (CAIDSOTG) of the Mandaue City police, identified the fatalities as 43-year-old Jerome Abad and his 22-year-old son Junmar Abad.

The shooting came even as the elder Abad’s relative, who requested anonymity for fear of reprisal, claimed that Jerome and Junmar were shot down inside their house at 1 am yesterday.

Noval said they conducted a drug bust operation against the two Abads after learning that they were still engaged in the illegal drug trade.

He said the elder Abad went downstairs from the second floor of the house after being told about the arrival of a buyer.

When he saw the police, Jerome Abad went back to the second floor but he was followed by police who shot him just as he was about to take out his firearm, Noval said.

According to Noval, Junmar hid in his room after learning about the shooting but police followed him. They told him to surrender but he refused to do so.

He said Junmar’s wife Rhea pleaded with police not to harm them before she came out with their four-year-old son.

Noval said police entered the room and saw him holding a gun, prompting them to fire at him.

Rhea claimed that her husband wasn’t armed and didn’t resist arrest.

Taken from the Abad home were one fully loaded .45 pistol, 17 sachets of shabu, P10,290 cash proceeds, P200 marked money, three mobile phones and three katanas or Japanese samurai swords.

Junmar was found with one fully loaded .38 revolver. Noval said Jerome had been in Mandaue City’s drug watch list since he transferred to the Paknaan relocation site.

Jerome’s relative claimed that the police arrived at the Abad house at 1 am, not 3 am as police said.

“The police ordered my aunt to get downstairs. They shot my uncle and cousin,” the nephew said.

He also alleged that the P29,000 cash of his aunt and jewelry worth P50,000 were lost after the incident.

He said the money was from Abad’s sister-in-law who is an overseas worker.
