IT was a combination of glitz and honor for Cebu Daily News last night as its entries to the prestigious Globe Media Excellence Awards (GMEA) bagged almost all major awards for the Print category and one for Social Media.

CDN senior reporter Ador Vincent Mayol won Reporter of the Year for Print for his story, “Wrinkled Hopes” published last April 16 which chronicled the lives of abandoned seniors left in the care of homes and strangers.

The award was the fourth for Mayol in that category after having won earlier in GMEA for three consecutive years since 2013.

The two other finalists this year were Nestor Burgos and Joey Gabieta, both Visayas bureau reporters from CDN’s sister company, Philippine Daily Inquirer.

CDN’s Ferdinand Edralin also won as Photojournalist of the Year for a picture published last April 9 at the height of the dry spell which hit Cebu. The photo showed a totally dried up dam which no longer had any water to supply for the province.

CDN chief photographer Tonee Despojo was a finalist in that category.

Meanwhile, Mayol also won his second major award that night as Best Reporter for Online News Portal for a CDN story entitled “Shining through the haze”, a narrative on the plight of persons with mental disability published last April 24.

CDN reporter Jose Santino Bunachita was also among three finalists in that category.

Both of Mayol’s winning entries were edited by CDN contributing editor Rosemarie Holganza-Borromeo.

“I live by God’s mercy. CDN won by the mercy of God,” said Mayol.

“Winning awards doesn’t make one better than the others in the same manner that losing doesn’t make a person of lesser value. I am just glad to make it this time. Accolades are good but they should not separate me from the rest. Like the other journalists, I, too, have to exert extra effort in every story I write, not for myself but for everyone,” Mayol added.

For his part, Edralin said that he did not expect the award at all.

“ Until now, it still has to sink in. I just want to thank my CDN family especially Tatay Tonee Despojo who believed in me,” said Edralin who was unable to attend the awards ceremony.

The award for Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year for Print went to Cherry Ann Lim of Sun Star Daily for her story on “Breaking Child Labor”.
Other awards were Reporter of the Year for Radio, which was given to Runelyn Jamolo of DYLL for his “Bayanihan Kontra Maternal Deaths” and Public Affairs Story for Radio given to Ruphil Bañoc of DYHP for his piece “Basura Bayloan og Grocery”.

Estela Grace “Jinky” Rosit” of Tv5 was this year’s Reporter of the Year for Television for her “El Nino sa Sugbo” while Alan Domingo of GMA-7’s was recognized for “Krisis sa Tubig” as the best Explanatory / Investigative Story for Television.

This year’s columnist was Julia Carreon-Lagoc of Panay News. CDN’s Atty. Gloria Estenzo-Ramos was among three finalists in that category for her column, “Basura Pa More”.

Blogger of the Year went to Christian Vincent Literatus, Social Media Advocate ( Joyce Turrefranca) and Social Media Campaign (Maria Sigrid Lo).

GMEA, which is now on its 5th year, was first launched in Cebu and Davao in 2012 as part of Globe’s advocacy in supporting press freedom by honoring media practitioners who demonstrate excellence and professionalism in their field of work.

This year’s winners came from a long list of entries numbering 789 submitted from all over the Visayas region.
