THE CEBU City Sports Institute bled green as the University of the Visayas (UV) claimed both the Passerelle and the SBP division titles in the finals of Milo-backed SBP-Passerelle Basketball Tournament Cebu yesterday.

In the Passerelle division, UV bested the defending champions Ateneo de Cebu in overtime, 60–58. UV’s SBP squad then completed the sweep afterwards as it pulled away late to defeat Ateneo de Cebu, 60–52, and claim its second straight crown.

With team manager and Cebu First District Representative Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas cheering his wards on, UV dug deep in the Passerelle class to overcome a 52-54 deficit with just four seconds remaining.

Off a timeout, Steve Padilla shed his defender and issued a perfect drop pass to Osias Padilla, who scored as the buzzer sounded to tie the match at 54-all and send the finals to an extra session.

In overtime, Ateneo led, 56-54, but Joshua Canoy, rattled in a three to give UV the lead for good. Padilla added a deuce to push the lead to 59-56 but John Aguilar responded with two of his own to pull Ateneo de Cebu to within one, 58-59. Enriquez then sank a free throw with just seven ticks left to seal the victory and the title for UV.

Padilla finished with 13 to lead the boys in green while Canoy, who was named as the tournament’s MVP, added 12.

In the SBP division, Ateneo de Cebu held a 43-41 lead at the start of the final canto but UV leaned on a decisive endgame run, sparked by a triple by Mike Monton, to claim the win.

Monton eventually finished with 22 points highlighted by six makes from beyond the arc while Franc Gabunada had 10.

UV will head next to the Visayas Finals, which will be staged in Roxas City on November 19 and 20.
