CEBU CITY, Philippines – Two years since the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the volume of passenger in Cebu ports has started to rebound.

The Cebu Port Authority (CPA) recorded a total of 324,931 passengers going in and out of various ports in Cebu island during the Holy Week, from April 10 to April 18, 2022.

The figures were roughly a 53-percent increase compared to the 151,000 figure during the Holy Week celebration in 2021.

“Based on the CPA consolidated report, a total of 166,039 inbound passengers and 158,892 outbound passengers trooped to seaports to return to their hometowns or spend their vacation in time for the Holy Week,” the CPA said in a press release.

Despite a rise in the influx of port passengers, the port management said the situation in all Cebu ports during the Holy Week was ‘generally peaceful.’

Cebu is currently under more relaxed forms of community quarantine.

Its largest cities – Cebu, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, and Talisay – have been downgraded to Alert Level 1, the most lenient quarantine classification, while the rest of the province remained under Alert Level 2.
