Is there hope in the Philippines?

We asked Cebuanos if they still see meaning and hope in the Philippines 117 years after we declared independence from the Spanish colonizers.

“Our country is so rich in natural resources but majority of the Filipinos are still suffering from poverty. And majority of the businesses here are owned by foreign investors. This  clearly indicates that were are not independent. The independence that was handed to us was just fake. There will always be hope for the Philippines and we always look forward to it, but the question is how long? Are we just going to accept our present situation? We are guarded by the line of Semi-Colonial and Semi-Feudal type of governance, which means that we are independent by constitution but politically, economically and culturally in direct colony of the US. We can even see that through our educational system.  And As “Iskolars nang Bayan”, what we need to do is to unite ourselves with the other sectors in the country like the farmers, fishermen and with the peasants because true reform can only be achieve through collective action”.

“Naa pa man gyu’y paglaum ang Pilipinas depende lang gyud na sa tao kung mo lihok.

I choose to be a security guard because i find joy in it.

There will always be hope, it is just a matter on how you strive to gain the freedom. We’d achieve independence if we only work hard for the betterment of our country. If people would be given more job opportunities there would be less drug addicts in the country. If street toughies should be educated or be given jobs, they wouldn’t be involved in stealing; based on my observation, most out-of-school youths are lazy and would just want jobs with less workloads and earn big-time.

For politicians though, iyahay raman silag korakutay ug dinautay.  If they would focus their plans for the majority then we would be in a better situation by now. I still believe that there is hope.”

“Hope? Yes! I’m positive! Because I’ve never dreamed of staying outside of the country.

Even though though there are a lot of roads being fixed, I know my children will benefit from it. Earlier today we experienced being stuck in an hour traffic in Mandaue because they are fixing the roads, but after that there wont be any hassle. Even if the progress is quite slow in pace but there is improvement as far as i’m concerned.

I (however think )politicians are so superficial, we need to dig more and think intellectually, especially there background to fully know whether they may be capable of running our country.”

“Of course, our country has hope. As a mother of two I would instill on my children the Filipino values that they can share to our country. It also depends on every Filipino how they can contribute to that hope. Paglaom ug Paglambo -They always go together”

Hope must not come from an external force, it must start with you. If you’ll just sit around and stare aimlessly at a wall then there would be no hope, you’ll never get the future you dream of you must always start it with yourself, those who think they can change something without even assessing the status of their selves are hypocrites. Hope can only be achieved if we strive and work together.”
