Visayas grid red alert up, rotational brownouts expected
CEBU CITY, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Wednesday, May 13 issued a red alert status in the Luzon and Visayas grids.
In the Visayas, the national grid anticipates insufficient power supply to address demand between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. after failure to import more electricity from Luzon.
With three power plants unable to generate electricity — TVI Unit 1, TVI Unit 2, and PEDC Unit 3, the region can only generate up to 2,510 megawatts (MW) of power.

But peak demand, according to NGCP, is forecast to reach 2,413 MW, which leaves a thin margin of only 97 MW.
“A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement,” NGCP explained.
Rotational brownouts
In energy, a red alert signifies a critical shortage, and that rotational brownouts may be expected.
In fact, hours after NGCP issued the alert, Metro Cebu’s power distributor, Visayan Electric Company, announced it would implement rotational brownouts in select areas in Mandaue City.
