At least 60 senior citizens were outside the Social Security System (SSS) building at Osmeña Building, Cebu City on Thursday morning to protest on the move of President Aquino to veto the increase in pension.

The protest was headed by Jaime Paglinawan, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Central Visayas coordinator.

Paglinawan said that the veto made by President Benigno Aquino III was unreasonable and anti-poor.

“These pensioners were former employees that contributed much to our economy. Let’s give these people what they deserve,” he said.

Despite the drizzle, senior citizens and members of militant groups continued with their protest outside the SSS building.

Mr. Aquino vetoed House Bill 5842 which was supposed to give an across-the-board P2,000-increase in the SSS monthly pension.

He explained that if the bill was enacted into law, that, it would push SSS into bankruptcy and collapse the social insurance institution by 2029.
