A WOMAN who attended Mass with her five-year-old daughter had to be restrained by Church security after she suddenly attacked her child.

Merlyn Abao heard Mass officiated by Fr. Benjamin Cortes at the National Shrine of St. Joseph in Mandaue City at 4:30 am when she suddenly screamed and stabbed her daughter with a broken bottle at least four times.

Churchgoers came to the girl’s rescue and stopped Abao, bringing the child to the Mandaue City District Hospital located 300 meters away from the shrine.

She was later transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.

Police said the girl sustained stab wounds on her chest and arms.

PO1 Juliet Trogo of the Women’s Desk of Police Precinct 1, said the church security guard took custody of the 29-year-old Abao while they called for police assistance.

Abao was later turned over to the VSMMC psychiatric ward while police located her common-law-husband who works as a baker in Barangay Centro, Mandaue City.

Abao, a native of Bohol province, lives in Barangay Cambaro located a kilometer away from the national shrine with her common-law husband, the girl’s stepfather.
