A SPORT utility vehicle was set on fire by a Caucasian-looking man yesterday afternoon in Lower Busay, Cebu City.

Later, a man believed to be a foreigner was found dead inside the burnt car by responding fire volunteers. He was lying in the passenger’s side.

Police believed the victim was murdered before the car was set on fire.

Busay Barangay Councilor Kevin Sanchez said that a Caucasian was seen leaving the area before the car caught fire.

Sanchez said the car arrived in the area after being towed by PUJ driver Antonio De Asis.

Sanchez said that according to De Asis, a foreigner who introduced himself as a Canadian asked him to tow the vehicle from Hilltop Hotel to the area for repair. De Asis, along with fellow PUJ driver, received P2,000 for their service.

The suspect was reportedly riding another car. When they reached the area at 2:40 p.m., the foreigner wrapped the vehicle, reportedly a Toyota RAV 4, with a car cover.

The foreigner then left and later the car caught fire. The fire was put under control at 3:10 p.m.

Homicide investigators and other responding policemen went to the hotel to look for the Canadian but he already left. They learned from the hotel management that the Canadian had checked in Wednesday night. Investigators also asked to provide them a copy of a CCTV footage.

SPO2 Rommel Bancog of homicide section said they are still determining the motive behind the incident.
