Owing to budget constraints and the onset of the Holy Week, there will be no reenactment of the American forces arriving in Talisay in this year’s observance of the Talisay landing, Councilor Valerio Ylanan said yesterday.

“It’s a simple celebration. We invited veterans to come. There’s a little food prepared for the commemoration of that historical day,” he said in a phone interview.

The 71st Talisay Landing commemoration will start with a Mass at the Liberation Park located in Barangay Poblacion.

After the Mass, Talisay City officials led by Mayor Johnny de los Reyes will lead the wreath-laying ceremony.

They will be joined by officials from the Central Command.

Lt. James Reyes, civil military operations officer of the Naval Forces Central (Navforcen), said they had a rehearsal last Tuesday morning for the activity on Saturday.

Reyes said they sent 20 personnel for the platoon that will join Centcom for the wreath-laying and flag ceremony at 8 a.m.

Ylanan, who heads the committee on tourism, said since the Talisay City Council has not yet approved the 2016 budget, they have to make do with what he can offer from his own pocket.

“Blessing in disguise nga na-timing sa Holy Week kay wala jud mi budget (It’s a blessing in disguise that it fell on a Holy Week since we don’t have a budget),” he said.

Ylanan said the council will hold a special session on  March 23 to tackle the 2016 budget.

This is the first time that the Talisay City government will not hold a reenactment of the Talisay landing.

Every year, students and military personnel work and rehearse together for the production.

It involves the use of Navy ships to show the landing of military forces on the beach of Talisay City.

In previous years, a military plane was used for the flower drop.
