Two shootings on Good Friday not related to Holy Week celebration — police

As police in Central Visayas said no major crimes occurred during Holy Thursday and Good Friday, road accidents, however, claimed one life and injured 10 others.

On Holy Thursday, a 68-year-old woman died after she was hit by a motorcycle as she was crossing the street in Sitio Guiwanon, Barangay Poblacion, Compostela town in northern Cebu.

Gloria Son died  when the motorcycle driven by Clarito Cortes rammed into her as Cortes was overtaking another vehicle.

Son and Cortes were rushed to the hospital  where doctors declared her dead on arrival, while Cortes, who was also injured was confined at the hospital. He will be facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.

On Good Friday, 10 people were injured after the Toyota pickup they were in overturned and rolled down a ravine as they negotiated the  downhill portion of a  road in Barangay Luka, Oslob town in southern Cebu.

PO3 Melvin Collados of the Oslob Police said the driver Dominico Miguel Ortega, 23, lost control of the vehicle that resulted to the accident.

Also injured in the accident  were Jovert Jerez, 24; Maelyn Bontilao, 36; Katheryn Villara, 23; Princess Inotan, 21, Miycki Adlawan, 26; Divina Gracia dela Cruz, 22; Vanijo Tunacao, 22; Erland Sanchez, 33; and Manresa Bohol, 23.

Collados said the victims were on their way home after visiting Tumalog Falls, when the accident occurred.

Meanwhile, two people were also shot and killed in separate shooting incidents on Good Friday.

In Santa Fe town in northern Cebu, a maintenance worker was shot dead by a Sugar Beach Resort security guard.

Joseph Tibay Jr., who worked at the Marlin’s Beach Resort, died after he was shot six times in the body by security guard Antonio Canas, 34.

Osmondo Veliganilao, who claims to be a relative of the victim, said the shooting was linked to the  tension at Sugar Beach Resort, which is at the center of a land dispute.

Santa Fe Mayor Jose Esgana ordered the blue guards of the beach resort and the families staying in the resort to vacate it for the safety and peace of both parties.

Esgana said only police personnel will stay in the area.

On the same day, in Cebu City, an Akrho  fraternity leader, was shot dead by an unknown assailant along General Maxilom Extension in Barangay Carreta, Cebu City.

Ariel Alia, 34, Zethazetha chapter leader of Akrho fraternity, was shot in the head by an unknown assailant.

Senior Supt. Renato Dugan, Police Community Relations of the Police Regional Office Central Visayas (PRO-7), said the shootings were not related to the observation of the Holy Week as the Santa Fe shooting is allegedly linked to a land dispute.

Security has been beefed up since last week in the ports, terminals and tourist destinations of  Central Visayas   to ensure the public’s safety from any untoward incident.
