Legazpi City — A gold and a silver in one day. Rick Angelo Sotto’s first foray in the country’s biggest multi-sporting event is indeed turning out roses.

Sotto snagged his second gold in the 59th Palarong Pambansa, while Region 7’s tennis players also made their presence felt to help the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) continue its fine showing in the early stages of the week-long, multi-sporting event.

Sotto became the first Cviraa athlete to win multiple golds after a near record-breaking performance in the elementary boys’ high jump event yesterday.

Sotto was the only one to clear the 1.63-meter high jump bar. He then attempted to tie the record of Alvaro Uy of the Cagayan Valley Regional Athletic Association (Cavraa), who recorded 1.73 meters in the 1998 Palaro.

“His body was way above but his feet grazed the bar. It was so close,” said Cviraa athletics trainer Arvin Loberanis.

Sotto’s second gold allowed Cviraa to match its total gold medal haul in athletics last year.

“My approach coming into the competition was to just enjoy the game. I was not expecting to win gold since this is just my first time in Palaro,” Sotto said. “Now, I am so thankful and happy that I was able to help the team.”

Sotto also topped the triple jump event last Monday.

Accounting for Cviraa’s other gold in athletics is John Marvin Rafols, who dominated the secondary boys’ long jump event.

Cviraa also got a huge lift from its elementary and secondary tennis teams.

Jan Godfrey Seno, Rucel Sero, Feb Wyndell Deja and Herbert Niño Sarraga won the secondary tennis team competition by beating Region 12 in the finals, 2-1.

The elementary team of Chryshyll Mykk Lungay, Earl Jan Mendez, Jericho Ben Otico and John Vianney Tavera also delivered a gold by beating Region 9, 2-1.

DIFFERENT BATTLEFIELD

Sotto’s sterling performance and the tennis players’ strong showing made up for Cviraa’s unproductive showing at the pool.

Top bet Raven Faith Alcoseba settled for a bronze in the secondary girls’ 100-meter backstroke event.

Debuting in the secondary competition, Alcoseba couldn’t recover as she managed just fourth in the 400m freestyle.

“The secondary competition is just different. I am satisfied with my performance, it was just my opponents here are tougher,” said Alcoseba, who battled headaches and had to take pain-relievers prior to her events.

Alcoseba is the record-holder in the elementary 200m individual medley.

Adding medals for Cviraa was gymnast Daniella Reggie dela Pisa, who bagged silver in the secondary individual all-around event.

Dela Pisa also teamed up with Alexsandra Victoria Cruz and Jazeerah Ariel Ona in pocketing silver in the team event.

Rogelio Miguel Tremedal bagged silver in the archery secondary boys’ 50-meter event.

As of this writing, Cviraa has six golds, five silvers and seven bronzes, good for sixth place behind National Capital Region, Region 4-A, Region 6, Region 10 and the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association.

Perennial Palaro champion NCR, is leading in the medal with 19 golds while Reg. 4-A is in temporary second with 12.
