After six years of dominating the light flyweight division, Donnie “Ahas” Nietes has decided to take his skills to the more competitive flyweight class.
Waiting for him there will be former world champion Edgar Sosa whom the country’s longest reigning boxing champion will battle on September 24 at the Stub Hub Center in Carson City, California, USA.
Nietes will vacate his WBO light flyweight throne for good.
The wily Ilongo warrior (38-1-4, 22 KOs) and Sosa (52-0, 30 KOs) will battle for the WBO intercontinental flyweight title in the card’s main event.
“This should be an exciting and tough fight for Nietes as Sosa is a former world champion. This will also be Nietes’ first time to fight in the 112lbs.,” ALA Promotions International CEO Michael P. Aldeguer.
Sosa is the former WBC world light flyweight champion and has fought several big names in his division including Brian Viloria whom he beat for the vacant WBC world light flyweight title in 2007. He defended the title 10 times but lost it to Mandaue City’s Rodel Mayol on 2009 in Mexico.
After that, he won six straight fights before losing to Thai Pongsaklek Wonjongkam for the WBC world flyweight title in 2011. He scored another six wins bagging the WBC silver and WBC international flyweight titles in the process. He fought for Gonzales’ last year but lost by TKO.
Meanwhile, Nietes was initially scheduled to fight WBA and WBO world flyweight king Juan Francisco Estrada this year but the latter was mandated by the WBO to defend his title against Japanese Kazuto Ioka first.
Nietes’ last defense of his WBO light fly strap last May 29 resulted in a lopsided fifth round TKO against Mexican Raul Garcia in Bacolod City. That was his 10th successful defense of the title.
Also featured in the Sept. 24 card promoted by ALA Promotions International is unbeaten and reigning WBO International featherweight champion Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo (14-0, 11KOs) and former world title contender “King” Arthur Villanueva (29-1, 15KOs).
