Open Chess Challenge tomorrow

THE first-ever “Open Chess Challenge for A Brighter Future” will unfold tomorrow at the second level of the Robinson’s Galleria Cebu.

The tournament, organized by the Catalyst Youth Leadership Institute, aims to spread the awareness about their campaign on youth leadership development in the country.

They believe organizing a chess tournament is an effective way to promote their cause.

One of the organizers, International Master (IM) Kim Steven Yap, said they are expecting to draw around a hundred participants in the two-day tournament that will use an eight-round Swiss system format with a 25-minute time control.

Adding excitement to the tournament are the huge cash prizes at stake.

The champion in the open category will take home P8,000 and a trophy while the runner-up will get P4,000. The rest of the top 15 players will receive cash prizes as well.

The top three kiddies and female players will also receive cash prizes.

The registration fee for the regular participant is P300 and P150 for the kiddies participants.

FIDE arbiter Marvin Ruelan will handle the tournament’s technicalities.
