Carcar village councilor killed at home; wife, son wounded

CEBU CITY—A village chief was killed while his wife and son were wounded on Wednesday night when armed men shot them inside their house in Barangay Napo, Carcar City, southern Cebu.

Mario Labra, 58, Former Municipal Councilor, Former Barangay Captain and incumbent Barangay Councilor Mario Labra of Barangay Napo, Carcar City barangay captain of Napo, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died upon reaching the district hospital in Carcar, about 42 km south of here.

His wife, Geronima, 55, suffered gunshot wound in the left arm, while their son, Clayborn, 24, was hit in the left leg.

PO1 Francisco Saberon of Carcar police station said that based on his initial investigation, the family was watching a program on television on Wednesday night when armed men kicked the door open and repeatedly shot Mario before shooting at Geronima and Clayborn.

Their neighbors, who heard the bursts of gunfire followed by screams for help, immediately rushed the victims to the hospital.

The police recovered six empty shells of caliber .45 pistol. Investigators had yet to determine the motive of and the persons behind the shooting.

The Carcar City Government is williving to give a reward of 200 thousand pesos for any information as to the whereabouts of the assailants responsible for killing the former barangay captain and now barangay counselor of Napo, Carcar City.

Mayor Nice Apura believes that the incident may be politically motivated because the barangay election was fast approaching.
