THE University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers’ brain trust has been dealt a massive blow after assistant coach Van Halen Parmis left the team indefinitely to tend to his ailing grandfather.
Parmis, the team’s lead scout and one of the south’s finest basketball minds who has amassed an incredible number of championships in the commercial basketball circuit, submitted his leave of absence to the office of team manager and Cebu First District Representative Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas the other day.
“After a series of consultations with my family, I have come to the very hard decision of putting my valued career on hold for the time being, given the current state of my grandfather. Like your honorable congressman, growing up, I have always looked up to him as my real father. I have treated him as my real father and he has treated me like his very own spoiled son. That said, I cannot sacrifice being away from him in this most critical time of his life,” said Parmis in his letter.
In an exclusive conversation with Cebu Daily News, Parmis said that he just could not stand to be away from his grandfather, who is suffering from prostate cancer and pneumonia, any longer.
Head coach Gary Cortes said Parmis’ absence will be greatly felt throughout the squad owing to the fact that it was the latter who recruited these players.
Cortes added that most of the players shed tears upon hearing of the development but said that they will continue to do their very best for Parmis.
For his part, Cortes quipped that he will miss having Parmis by his side on the bench especially with the latter’s innate ability to motivate the players.
