Ateneo de Cebu, Abellana National School in tight race for Milo secondary crown
Reigning secondary division champions Sacred Heart School–Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles and the Abellana National School (ANS) are in for an exciting finish in the 21st Milo Little Olympics Visayas Regional Finals.
After the initial and official general points system in the secondary division was released yesterday, SHS-AdC came out on top with 58 points while dark horse, ANS, was lurking at second with 52.75 points. Former champions University of San Carlos-Basic Education (USC-BED) was at third with 40 points.
The points came from swimming, sepak takraw and arnis, which finished yesterday.
“It’s going to be a tight race for ANS and SHS–AdC because both schools still have strong teams in the remaining events that will end today, particularly in the ball games,” said Visayas Regional Finals organizer Ricky Ballesteros.
The Magis Eagles are also leading the elementary division with 45 points while the Cebu City Central School is at second place with 40 points. The Northern Visayan Colleges and Kalibo Sun Yat Sen School are tied at third with 30 points.
SHS–AdC got a lift from its tankers, who joined the record-breaking spree in this meet.
Johan Tubesa finished with three gold medals in the individual events together with Yuan Chiongbian.
Chiongbian broke the 2014 record of Michael Ichiro Kong in the 200m freestyle by logging a time of 2:08.19, eclipsing the latter’s record of 2:10.47.
Tubesa broke two more 2014 records of Kong. He logged in 1:04.81 in the 100m backstroke to erase Kong’s 1:06.07 and also bested the latter’s 100m freestyle time of 58.31 by clocking 56.68.
Chiongbian and Tubesa teamed up with fellow Magis Eagles tankers to win two relay events and break another record. They topped the boys secondary 400m freestyle relay with a new record of 4:08.00, besting USC’s 2013 record of 4:11.81. The team also topped the 200m medley relay.
Meanwhile, more swim records were broken yesterday. Kyla Soguilon of Kalibo Sun Yat Sen School, the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Junior Athlete of the Year, logged four new records and erased three records of Talisay City’s Raven Faith Alcoseba and the 20-year-old record of Lynette Ang.
She toppled Alcoseba’s records in the 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle events and Ang’s 1996 Milo meet record in the 50m backstroke event.
Mary Louise Lacson of the University of Saint La Salle of Bacolod City shattered three records in the 200m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke.
