Argao to close old landfill

The Argao municipal government will close their landfill which their mayor described as similar to the Inayawan landfill in Cebu City.

Mayor Stanley Caminero said yesterday that they were closing their landfill in Sitio Lulukhan, Barangay Sia, Argao town in southern Cebu.

“(Our landfill is) no different from Inayawan nga sagol tanan (Our landfill is no different from the Inayawan landfill in Cebu City where all garbage are mixed),” Caminero said.

Caminero said that they were working on closing their Sua landfill because they were opening a new three- to four-hectare landfill in Barangay Bulasa.

He said that this undertaking would be a public-private partnership or a project of the Argao municipal government and a private firm, Racal Company.

He said that the company had agreed in principle to donate the lot in Barangay Bulasa.

However, while the town was in the process of closing the landfill, the town government was implementing segregation in the Sua landfill.

“What we did, we just separate all the plastics. Dunay area tanan kay plastics naa didto gibutang (There is an area in the dumpsite where all plastic wastes are placed there). The rest of the biodegradable among tabunan og (we will cover with) top soil,” he said.

He said that since biodegradable wastes would normally decompose in four to six months, they decided to top it with soil so that after, it would be reused as fertilizer.

He also said that the city strictly implemented the no-segregation and no-collection policy in the town when he assumed office.

“Pagkakita sa mga tawo sa labayan separate gyud nila ang malata ug dili malata. Sa households, market they should segregate,” Caminero said.

“It not an easy thing. We are seeing little by little the change that we want to see sa attitude and effect,” he said.

He said last Friday that they had also started to plant trees at the perimeter of the Sua dumpsite as part of their effort to reforest the area.
