On the US election coverage

Thanks to technology, I can watch the news both here in the country and abroad through cable TV in the comfort of my own home.

Lately I’ve been following the coverage of the campaign activities for the US elections to be held this November.

The two presidential candidates — Hilary Clinton for the Democratic party and Donald Trump for the Republican party — were a study in contrasts; the Democrats were united behind Clinton while the Republicans were divided for and against Trump.

The party primaries taught us the wisdom and the importance of knowing the platforms of governance of the candidates which are largely indicative and reflective of their respective parties’ stand.

The Democrats are liberals while the Republicans are conservative. But political analysts in the US said this year’s elections have become unpredictable with Clinton being hounded by the disclosure of her private emails during her tenure as secretary of state.

A lot of Republican leaders see Trump as highly irresponsible, someone who doesn’t own up to what he said and did in either his business or personal life.

Worse, Trump is seen as a bigot, a racist and a chauvinist who insults everyone including persons with disabilities (PWDs). A lot of legislators have banded together to convince the US public not to vote for Trump.

Trump intends to build a wall along the border of Mexico and the US because he believes that the Mexicans who come to the US are criminals and rapists.

But interestingly, Trump’s unpopularity with the African Americans, Latinos and Mexicans didn’t stop him from tying Clinton in a dead heat in the election surveys.

His centerpiece of immigration and national security is very popular among his mostly Caucasian American supporters who resent the rising success of African Americans, Latinos, Mexicans and other minorities.

Trump boasts to the Americans that it is only he who can fix the problems of the US. Despite being an avowed capitalist, Trump has weirdly enough shown his preference to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, saying that Putin is a better leader than US President Barack Obama.

After seeing and hearing Trump, I can say that he is unqualified to become president of the US.
