THE Mandaue City celebrated the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Day last Friday along with the Mandaue City Schools Division and the Department of Education regional office.
This year’s theme is “Strengthening the ALS Learners.”
The activity was participated by the students from the different ALS barangay chapters.
Blandina Siconrojas, ALS Education Program Specialist, said getting a quality education is not anymore a hindrance for the less-fortunate individuals in Mandaue City as the program offers free education.
“Our literacy modules are very good, but I am proposing to the City Government to include a livelihood component into the module to make our ALS graduates ready to work,” said Siconrojas.
“Most of them are looking for work after graduation or are currently employed but seeking for promotion,” she added.
The ALS is designed primarily for the out-of-school youth, some of whom are juvenile offenders.
The learning modules run from six to eight months depending on the ability of the students to catch up the lessons.
The ALS students should pass the National Accreditation and Equivalency Test for them to graduate from either elementary or high school.
Siconrojas said the secondary graduates can immediately enroll in college because they are not covered by the K-12 program.
Mayor Luigi Quisumbing, said in his speech, that the City of Mandaue will always support the program and the learners.
“I know there are obstacles, doubters, mistakes… but with determination and hard work, there are no barriers to success.
The City will always support you and give you quality education throughout the duration of the ALS program,” said Quisumbing.
