THE Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) in Mindanao will bring rains to Cebu until Thursday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration ( Pagasa) Mactan as the ITCZ has intensified the southwest monsoon.
Pagasa weather specialist Romeo Aguirre said the rains will come mostly in the afternoon till evening with Southern Cebu to be mostly affected by the ITCZ.
As the weather bureau anticipates more rains in Cebu, Aguirre advises people to ready their umbrellas, raincoats and other protective gears.
The public is also asked to take precautionary measures as the rains may cause floods and landslides, Aguirre said, explaining that 30 millimeters of rain an hour can cause flooding.
The normal average rainfall for the month of October is 199.9 millimeters.
As of 3 p.m. yesterday, Pagasa was able to record 2.4 millimeters of rain.
Aside from the ITCZ, other major weather disturbances being monitored by Pagasa is the Low Pressure Area (LPA) spotted 700 kilometers west of the Pacific Ocean.
While the LPA is not seen to affect Cebu’s weather condition as of yet, Aguirre said that this has a moderate chance of becoming a tropical cyclone named “Julian”.
Typhoon Igme, which was the first typhoon for October, left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) at 2 p.m. yesterday.
Meanwhile, Pag-asa’s latest weather bulletin for La Niña shows a fifty percent possibility of the phenomenon occurring on the last quarter of the year if the sea surface temperature remains consistent at negative point five for three months, said Aguirre.
La Niña is a climate pattern that is associated with the abnormal cooling of surface oceans and the rise in sea temperature which is expected to bring more typhoons than usual into the Philippines.
