MALLS should assign security personnel near escalators to prevent accidents, a Cebu City official said yesterday.
Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, who heads the City Council’s committee on public order and safety, told representatives of malls in the city during yesterday’s meeting on the need to secure people especially children using escalators.
“It was also agreed during our meeting that they will put up signages and place them near escalators. Because right now, their only signages are small drawings which aren’t easily seen by shoppers,” he said.
Tumulak said he asked the representatives of at least 14 malls in the city during yesterday’s meeting to submit to his office a safety plan in case an emergency or untoward incident happens.
Among those who were present in the meeting were representatives from SM Seaside City Cebu, City Soho Mall, Gaisano Capital South, Gaisano Capital, One Pavilion, White Gold
Club, Super Metro Basak, Super Metro Colon, Metro Gaisano Ayala, Metro Fresh ’n Easy, SM City Cebu, Robinsons Land, Ayala Center Cebu and SIB.
Tumulak said he called for the meeting with the malls after he received information that another child got snagged in an elevator in a mall in the North Reclamation Area (NRA) last Tuesday.
“We don’t want any more incidents of people getting caught in escalators. We also want to remind shoppers who go inside malls and establishments, especially those bringing children, senior citizens and pregnant women, to be careful,” he said.
He said the representatives who attended the meeting agreed to this suggestion.
