THE MOST important meal of the day, breakfast comes from the words “breaking the fast” after a long night’s sleep. It’s best to eat a full breakfast because we need to raise our energy level and restore blood glucose to normal.
It should be the most satiating meal of the day since eating a large breakfast satiates our hunger and reduces daily caloric intake resulting in long-term weight maintenance.
With a better street level location at One Paseo Saturnino along Ma. Luisa Road in Banilad, Canvas Bistro & Bar Gallery’s easy access attracts diners to just drop by and enjoy good food.
Australian Chef Steve Shrimski and Cebuana wife Eya have more flexible and longer operating hours in the new location. Canvas is now open at 7 a.m. with the addition of more extensive healthy and hearty breakfast offerings.
I welcomed Eya’s invitation for breakfast with Eileen Mangubat, the esteemed former publisher of Cebu Daily News. Eileen and I had a lot of catching up to do. We kept tabs on our respective careers in the communications field over the years.
First item on the breakfast menu that caught our attention is the Cheesy Mite Scroll. Andrew Williamson using flour, water, cheese and vegemite created this Australian bread.
Vegemite is an Australian dark brown spread with distinctive taste made from leftover brewer’s yeast extract with various vegetable and spice additives. This is best eaten spread thinly on bread and crackers since it is salty. The vegemite is actually the Australian version of the British marmite.
For the health conscious, the Chef’s Muesli, Honey Toasted Oats, assorted dried fruits with low fat yogurt and low fat milk is a good start. The Sweet Corn and Zucchini Fritters with grilled tomato, spinach and mushrooms, Fluffy Banana Buckwheat Pancakes with grilled ham, Brie and scrambled eggs are interesting choices.
Eileen and I shared Bagel with Cream Cheese and Salmon Gravalax with scrambled eggs and the Zucchini Fritters.
The Filo Breakfast (Australian term for Filipino) is as Pinoy as it can get– Garlic Rice, Fried Egg, Homemade Beef Tenderloin Tapa and Skinless Longaniza.
The Hearty Breakfast choice can really satiate anyone’s appetite –Two Eggs (cooked any style), Hash Brown. Aussie Beef Sausage Grille Bacon, Baked Beans and Garlic Mushrooms served with whole wheat bread.
The choices of Omelets and the Eggs Benedict Collection will entice a coterie of early morning fitness buffs. And an order of freshly brewed coffee is bottomless from Monday to Thursday. I simply love Canvas robust flavored coffee served in oversized cups.
