Moreno tops Cepca Anniversary Chess

Carlos Moreno emerged champion in the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association’s (Cepca) 26th Anniversary Chess Cup held last weekend at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

Moreno finished with 8.5 points as logged eight straight wins against some of the top contenders of the tournament before finishing with a draw in the ninth against junior wood pusher Jethro Esplanada.

The senior woodpusher Moreno went home with P10,000 and a trophy for his victory in the nine-round Swiss system format tournament.

Rommel Ganzon placed second with 8.0 points to receive the P7,000 purse. Esplanada finished with 7.5 points together with top-seeded International Master (IM) Kim Steven Yap. Esplanada placed third because of a higher tie-break score.

Completing the top ten were Venancio Loyola, Merben Roque, Richard Natividad, Mario Mangubat, Bhell Ortiz and Michael Tinga.
