Game 6, Ginebra leads series, 3-2

A LONG wait could finally end today as the Barangay Ginebra Kings shoot for the 2016 PBA Govenors’ Cup crown when they tangle with the Meralco Bolts in Game Six of their Best-of-Seven Finals series at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Kings moved within a victory away from winning their first crown in eight years after they chalked up a tight 92-81 in Game 5 last Sunday.

“Things kind of came together for us tonight and that’s the first time in this series that’s happened where we got a little bit of defense and we got a little bit of offense together,” Ginebra head coach Tim Cone said right after the win that gave the Kings a 3-2 lead and a chance to bag a first championship since the 2008 Fiesta Conference.

The Kings led by double digits for the large part of Game 6 but had to hold off the Bolts in the endgame to seal the win that put them in the lead for the first time in the series.

Meralco took the series-opener, 114-109, before Ginebra evened things up with an 82-79 win in Game 2.

The Bolts regained the upper-hand by winning Game 3, 107-103, but the Kings tied the series anew by bouncing back in Game 4, 88-86.

Justin Brownlee keyed Ginebra’s critical Game 5 win by producing 29 points and 10 rebounds two nights after a subpar showing in the Gin Kings’ 88-86 victory in Game 5.

While Brownlee has been steady, Ginebra’s also getting solid contributions from their locals led by Jayjay Helterbrand, LA Tenorio, Mark Caguioa, Joe Devance, Scottie Thompson, Sol Mercado and Japeth Aguilar.
