Teachers to undergo random drug tests

THE provincial office of the Department of Education (DepEd) consented to having public school teachers undergo random drug tests to determine their fitness for the job.

Rhea Mar Angtud, Cebu provincial school division superintendent, said they are only waiting on the Cebu Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Office (CPADAO) to conduct the tests.

Angtud said if a teacher is found guilty of illegal drug use, he or she may face termination.

“It’s not the same as getting sick since they cannot avoid it. They have a choice to avoid using drugs and they should face the consequence of their action,” Angtud said.

The CPADAO requested DepEd to create a committee that will help in the rehabilitation of teachers.

Angtud said they are not mandated by law to conduct rehabilitation since they can coordinate with other agencies for that purpose.
