THE University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) remained the top-ranked team in the ongoing Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate football tournament after it held the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) to a scoreless draw yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.
USPF leads the current standings with three wins, one loss and one draw while USJ-R has a record of one victory, two draws and two defeats.
In the second match, the University of San Carlos (USC) and defending champions University of Cebu (UC) also finished their tied at 1-1.
UC is currently second behind USPF with a single win and six draws while USC has the same record with USJ-R.
UC gained the upper hand early in the match after Jasund Felicilda scored a goal in the 40th minute.
The game got physical in the second half that resulted into an altercation between JR Castillon of UC and USC’s John Roy Melgo. The referee gave Castillon a red card, which led to his ejection.
Undermanned, UC’s defense collapsed and USC exploited it by stepping up their offense.
Incidentally, it was Melgo who scored for USC via a penalty kick in the 77th minute. Neither team scored until the final buzzer.
The remaining matches of the second round of eliminations will be held today.
USJ-R will face UC at 1 p.m. while USPF plays against the University of the Visayas at 3 p.m.
