Councilor pushes for Mandaue lone district

The Mandaue City Council presented a draft resolution urging Congressman Jonas Cortes to pass a bill for Mandaue City to become a lone congressional district during their regular session last Wednesday.

The resolution proposed by Councilor Demetrio Cortes Jr. is requesting Congressman Cortes to pass a bill in the House of Representatives making Mandaue City a lone congressional district separate from the 6th District of Cebu, which covers Mandaue, Cordova and Consolacion.

The resolution states that the recent conversion of Mandaue City as one of the primary sources of high quality manufactured consumer products in Cebu completed the transformation of Mandaue into a highly urbanized center of population not only in Cebu province but also in Central Visayas.

Mayor Luigi Quisumbing said he is hoping that Congress would tackle Cortes’ bid for Mandaue lone district as well as the fate of the displaced towns of Consolacion and Cordova.

According to Gov. Hilario Davide III, the Mandauehanons have been longing for their city to be recognized as a lone district.
