After spending weeks of training for the upcoming Batang Pinoy National Finals, the Talisay City triathlon team expressed concern over the Philippine Sports Commission’s (PSC) advisory of holding off 10 sporting events.
Included in the 10 sporting events that will be put on hold for the meantime because of the low number of participants is triathlon.
The others are archery, cycling, gymnastics, judo, pencak silat, rugby football, weight lifting, wrestling and wushu.
Roland Remolino, the father of the multi-titled national triathlon team member Andrew Kim Remolino of Talisay City, said it will be disappointing if the PSC will push through on canceling the aforementioned events since they have already invested a lot of time, money and effort in preparing for the meet. They have also booked their tickets to Davao del Norte, which will host the event together with Tagum City.
“That’s not good,” said Remolino. “We have already trained for this and we are prepared for this competition.”
His son, 16-year-old Andrew Kim, who is also set to compete in the cycling event, was very worried when Cebu Daily News told him about the advisory.
“I’m kind of disappointed especially for my teammates because I saw them train hard for this competition,” said Andrew Kim, who recently competed in the 2016 Hong Kong ASTC Sprint Triathlon Asian Cup where he placed 30th.
His teammates Karen Manayon, Renz Wynn Corbin, Justine Hermosa, Jeanna Mariel Cañete and Moira Erediano are set to compete in the triathlon event of the Batang Pinoy.
Remolino and his athletes are part of the 75-man delegation of Cebu Province that will be sent to Davao del Norte and Tagum City for the multi-sporting meet meet slated on Nov. 27 to Dec. 2.
Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) official Brando Velasquez was also worried about the impending cancellation of the 10 sporting events.
“It’s very unfortunate for our athletes if these 10 sporting events will be cancelled because they have already prepared for this. I hope that PSC will make a positive announcement about this and I hope they will push through these events because the athletes have already sacrificed a lot,” said Velasquez.
“But it’s their call. We can’t do anything if they cancel these events. All we can do is replace those athletes affected by this with another set of athletes who will compete in the remaining sports events.”
