A MAN was shot dead by a police officer after he cornered and stabbed his cousin several times along Nivel Hills in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City Thursday morning.
The police officer PO1 Feliciano Yballe of the Pardo police precinct said he was headed to work when he noticed that there were vehicles that stopped by the area and saw the suspect identified as 38-year-old Deddy Batoto chasing down Otelio Bongat Jr. with a kitchen knife.
“I was wondering why vehicles stopped in the area so I alighted from my motorcycle. Then I saw the victim being cornered by the suspect. I apprehended the suspect and told him ‘Pulis ni, hunong!’ but he wouldn’t relent,” Yballe said.
Yballe said he tried to intervene and tell Batoto to stop attacking Bongat to no avail.
The cop then shot Batoto and he died on the spot.
“I’m not sure where he was hit. I just made sure I neutralized him,” Yballe said.
Bongat, Batoto’s maternal cousin, sustained wounds on his head, right shoulder and the nape of his neck.
The 50-year-old Bongat said he was only talking to Batoto’s mother about the money to be sent by his father to him on his birthday.
“Nagstorya mi sa iyang mama kay padal-an daw ko sa akong papa og kwarta para sa akong birthday. Hugaw lang gyud iyang huna-huna,” Bongat explained
