Hundreds join Garbo sa Lapu-Lapu

Hundreds of individuals from the 15 barangays in Lapu-Lapu City participated in the 15th Garbo sa Lapu-Lapu street dancing competition and featured the products and other establishments that are known in their respective area yesterday afternoon.

The Higante category featured furniture products of barangay Mactan, a replica of the Marcelo Fernan Bridge by barangay Pusok, aviation industries by Bankal, oil reservoir by Looc, a giant Air Force personnel by Pajo, a giant Navy personnel by Canjulao and a marine sanctuary by Barangay Tingo.

The float category showcased Barangay Maribago’s famous guitar, Mactan’s woodcraft and furniture, the Philippine Economic Zone Authority located in Barangay Ibo, Barangay Agus’ scuba diving, beach resorts, hotels and restaurants, food manufacturing business in Barangay Poblacion, rope making in Suba-basbas, Gun-ob’s hanging rice (puso) and lechon and Babag’s pyrotechnics.

Only three barangays joined the Street Dancing, Pasahalad and Search for Festival Dance Queen, namely, barangays Mactan, Buaya and Gun-ob.

Pasahalad stands for “Pasalamat pinaagi sa pasayaw ug paghalad,” said Gun-ob barangay captain Jose Dungog, who is the chairman of the Garbo sa Lapu-Lapu Festival Committee.

Dungog said that Garbo sa Lapu-Lapu is one of the major projects of the Lapu-Lapu City government in highlighting tourism.

It is a colourful parade of floats with dancing contingents and Higante, depicting and exhibiting the assets and rich culture of every barangay of the city.

Mayor Paz Radaza thanked the committee and all the participants who once again provided entertainment to the visitors and the whole Oponganons as well.

“We did all of this for us to have fun and be united in honor of the (fiesta of) Birhen sa Regla (on Monday, November 21),” said Mayor Radaza.

Barangay Mactan was declared over-all winner after it won first place in various competitions, including Street Dancing with P10,000 cash and plaque, Higante category with P20,000 cash prize and Search for Festival Queen with P5,000 cash and a plaque, and second place in the Float category with a P30,000 cash prize and a plaque.

Barangay Buaya won first place in the Pasahalad category with P50,000 cash plus plaque, second in Street Dancing with P8,000 cash plus plaque and third for the Search for Festival Queen with P3,000 plus plaque.

Barangay Gun-ob won third place for the Street Dancing with P5,000 cash and a plaque, fourth place in the Float category with P15,000 cash plus plaque, second in the Search for Festival Queen with P4,000 cash plus plaque and third place for the Pasahalad category with P40,000 cash plus plaque.

Barangay Suba-basbas won first place in the Float category with P30,000 cash prize, followed by Mactan, Agus, Gun-ob and Babag with P25,000, P20,000, 15,000, P10,000 cash prizes respectively. Non-winners received P5,000 consolation prize each.

Barangays Mactan, Pajo, Olango Island, Canjulao and Bankal were declared first to fifth place winners for the Higante category with P20,000, P17,000, P15,000, P12,000, P10,000 cash prizes respectively. The non-winning contingents also received P5,000 each.
