ADONES Aguelo of the Naris Singwangcha Promotions successfully defended his Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) lightweight title with a resounding fifth round knockout against Rodel Wenceslao of Team Joeric Boxing at the Maasin City Sports Complex last Friday night.
Both boxers quickly went after each other’s scalp at the start of the no-holds-barred showdown with Wenceslao getting the uppehand in the opening round when he rocked Arguelo with solid combinations.
But instead of going for the kill, Wenceslao surprisingly halted his offensive, revealed his trainer Edsel Tuñacao. This allowed Aguelo to recover and get his second wind.
Aguelo became more careful in the ensuing rounds and piled up points until the fateful fifth when he connected with a bone crushing right uppercut that sent Wenceslao crashing to the canvas.
Wenceslao failed to beat referee Tony Peson’s count as Arguelo snatched the win in the 1:15 mark of the fifth round.
Both boxers are based in Cebu City.
Aguelo improved to 27 wins with 19 knockouts along with 14 defeats and two draws while Wenceslao suffered his 13th loss with 11 wins, four knockouts and a draw.
