Cebu Tenpin Bowling Association’s (Cetba) Jake Yap put up an impressive performance to emerge champion in the Masters event of the 8th Cetba National Tenpin Open yesterday at the SM City Cebu Bowling Center.
Yap climbed from 11th place in the qualifying round to the top place in the final round after defeating Davao Tenpin Bowling Association’s (Datba) Fernie Ballano, 240-146. With the win, Yap bagged the whopping P50,000 purse.
Things didn’t look good for Yap early on as he finished 16th in the first round with 999 pinfalls. CETBA-E.O Bucoy’s John Vincent Galindo topped the first round with 1,095 pinfalls.
In the second round, Yap started to gain headway and managed to take the top spot after knocking down 471 pins. Bowlingplex Tenpin Association’s (BTA) Clifford Tan was at second place with 456 pin falls while Ballano settled for third with 450 pinfalls.
Yap remained at the top in the third round as he downed 247 pins while Ballano climbed to the second place with 246 and CETBA-CITU’s Roland Bantilan at third with 218. Because of this, he earned a twice-to-beat edge in the finals.
Ballano defeated Arthur Tapaya of BTA in the quarterfinals, 240-190, then edged Bantilan in the semis, 212-200, to gain a seat in the final round.
Second title
Yap then teamed up with Ronan Barredo and Micmic Miranda to dominate the team event of the competition sanctioned by the Philippine Bowling Congress (PBC).
They finished with 1,362 pinfalls series while BTA, composed of Tan, Arthur Tapaya and Luther Tapaya claimed the second spot with 1,313 pinfalls. The team of Ballano, Celis Viloria and Mark Li finished third with 1,300 pinfalls.
Yap and his team received P15,000 cash prize.
Jerry Davis topped the singles event with 1,438 pinfalls while Luther Tapaya ruled the all-events category with 1,750 pinfalls.
Around a hundred bowlers from various bowling clubs from all over the country took part in the five-day tournament.
