LOOKING back on the year that will come to a close soon, Twitter Philippines has listed down the top 10 hashtags that generated most tweets, either in elections, entertainment and sports that got every Filipino hooked this year.

On Tuesday, December 6, Twitter Philippines named its top 10 biggest hashtags for 2016, with the presidential elections, Kids Choice Awards and
AlDub landing on the three top spots.

Here, we list it down for you:

10. Typhoon Lawin

With its international name “Haima,” Typhoon Lawin, which struck the country in October, is one of the year’s most powerful typhoons that struck the country in October. It resulted in billions of worth in damage to infrastructure, agriculture and households.

Over 440,000 tweets were sent on the topic with hashtags including #LawinPH, #Haima, #PrayForPH, #rescuePH, #reliefPH, and #walangpasok.

9. Marcos Burial

Tension and emotions got high and people took to Twitter to air their sentiments about the Supreme Court’s decision to transfer the remains of Ferdinand Marcos to the Libingan ng mga Bayani. The #MarcosBurial conversation reverberated throughout Twitter after the sudden burial ten days after SC’ decision.

Those who were against, and even those who are in favor of the decision, took their stand not just on the streets but as well as on Twitter, gaining over 500,000 tweets for #MarcosNotAHero.

8. Manny Pacquiao

PacMan’s popularity grew even more after he became the first Filipino professional boxer to be elected into the Philippine senate. He continues to be victorious in the boxing arena, winning over Timothy Bradley on April 9 and generating around 380,000 tweets for the fight. Later this year, he returned to the ring and beat Las Vegas-native Jessie Vargas, getting an additional 280,000 tweets.

7. Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach

Getting over 430,000 tweets for #HomecomingQueen, Pia Wurtbach’s fans also got a special session with her via the #AskMissUniverse Twitter Q&A party. At the Binibing Pilipinas pageant in April, she crowned her successor, Maxine Medina and gave a heartfelt speech that moved everyone to tears. The event got around 340,000 tweets from netizens.

6. University of Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP)

Top athletes from universities all over the country competed in a
number of sports such as basketball, volleyball, and the heart-stopping cheerdancing competition, not only in a bid for the title, but also for school pride.

5. BTS K-Pop Group

Filipinos showed their love for the Korean boyband Bangtan Boys (better known as BTS) after Twitter held a global contest for the most tweets using the hashtag #loveBTS in May. The Philippines took 6th place worldwide. Fans screamed as BTS performed live on their concert last July 30.

4. On The Wings Of Love

The romantic comedy “On the Wings of Love” (OTWOL) is one of 2016’s highest rated Philippine teleseryes. It is topbilled by the real life
couple JaDine—James Reid and Nadine Lustre—one of the hottest loveteams in the industry.

3. AlDub

Proving that they are still the pair to beat, the phenomenal love team of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza (Yaya Dub), which first broke the Internet in 2015 with over 41 million tweets, still dominate conversations this year. The loveteam’s road to Twitter stardom continued as AlDub’s Valentine’s day campaign #AlDubIsLove amassed over 4.1 million tweets.

In July, AlDub celebrated their #AlDub1stAnniversary with 6.6 million tweets along with a customized Twitter emoji, the first created for a TV show in Southeast Asia. The pair also had their first movie #AlDubImagineYouAndMe, released this year. It garnered 7.8 million tweets in its first week.

When the couple finally tied the knot last October 22 in Eat Bulaga’s Kalyeserye episode, fans sent over 8 million tweets using the #AlDubWedding hashtag.

2. Kids’ Choice Awards

The 2016 Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards nominated four Filipino celebrities for the Favorite Pinoy Personality Award—Maine Mendoza (@mainedcm), Kathryn Bernardo (@bernardokath), Enrique Gil (@itsenriquegil), and James Reid (@JayeHanash), as well as basketball player Jeron Teng for the Favorite Asian Sports Star Award.

Fans of the stars took to Twitter to show their support but Maine’s fans proved to be the strongest when the Dubsmash Queen emerged as the
winner, clinching the Favorite Pinoy Personality award. Jeron won the Favorite Asian Sports Star Award.

1. Philippine Elections and President Rodrigo Duterte

The national elections in the Philippines was the most talked about, with over 35 million elections-related tweets. Twitter worked closely with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on #PiliPinas2016 to inspire Filipinos to engage and discuss via tweets on important topics shaping their voting decisions.

On election day alone, more than four million election-related tweets were recorded, and 330,000 tweets on Inauguration Day. Filipinos sent over 280,000 tweets using #SONA2016 responding to Duterte’s first State of the Nation Address.
