THE City Traffic Management System of Lapu-Lapu City announced that they will be closing a portion of M.L. Quezon Highway today to give way to a drag-racing event.
The motorcycle drag racing will start at the foot of the Marcelo Fernan bridge until the corner of Lapu-Lapu City Hall, covering a distance of about 500 meters. The road closure will start from 1 a.m. until 10 p.m.
CTMS officer-in-charge Mario Napoli said he has prepared a traffic rerouting plan to make the opposite side of the road as two-way lane.
“Bisan og Sunday ni ang event pero dili lang ta mokompyansa kadtong moagi sa M.L. Quezon Highway og kinahanglan nga mosayo sila og gikan aron dili ma-late (Though the event is on a Sunday, we should not take this for granted and those who pass by ML Quezon in going to their destination should leave early so they would not get late),” said Napoli.
Bryan Mallari, chairman of the event organizer Mallari Racing Development, said, “We want to make Lapu-Lapu City a drag race center outside Luzon area, and we will make this event as a tourist attraction,” said Mallari.
He said the Lapu-Lapu City government has been very supportive to different sporting events unlike other local government units where they find difficulty getting permit for a drag race.
He said the competition is exclusive only for Suzuki motorcycle owners since the event is sponsored by Suzuki.
On December 17 and 18, the Suzuki Cup will have a Circuit type of racing and Motack (Motorcycle Time Attack) Championship round for skills-type competition at Lapu-Lapu City Hall grounds.
The registration fee for each participant is P1,100. Cash prizes and trophies await the winners.
