TOUGH MEATBALLS
A party hostess was her usual generous self, serving her friend’s son with food that she cooked on the buffet table.
The hostess then asked the boy about his opinion of the food and he replied “Ai gahi man kaayo ang bola-bola. Di pud ko ganahan sa salad (Ah, the meatballs were tough and I didn’t like the salad).”
The hostess’s smile faltered at the boy’s remarks while his mother went red-faced with embarrassment.
ARTHRITIS ATTACK
Another party hostess was surprised when her “garlic butter shrimp” dish, which always ran out during family occasions, was untouched after the party.
After sampling the dish herself and finding nothing wrong with it, a relative told her how she envied her for eating the dish.
It turned out that the relative is staying away from the dish as her arthritis flared up a few hours after eating it, and her elder siblings also suffered the same ailment.
DYNAMITE SPRING ROLLS
A balikbayan aunt has at least one story to take back with her after she returned back home overseas.
During a New Year’s party, she took some lumpia (Chinese spring roll) on her plate and chatted with her relatives as she took a quick bite of the dish.
The first bite caused her to stop abruptly as her eyes moistened and her face turned red, beads of sweat running down profusely.
She found out that she ate the notoriously spicy lumpia called “dinamita” or “dynamite” which was stuffed with chilies.
