SWU spiker likely to make Nat’l pool

CEBUANO spiker Alden Dave Cabaron of the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras is likely to make the 20-man pool of the Philippine Men’s Volleyball Team which will compete in the Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia this August.

In an exclusive chat with Cebu Daily News, men’s national team head coach Sammy Acaylar said he saw six potential players in Cebu after the two-day tryouts held here. On top of that list is the 2015 Cesafi Most Valuable Player (MVP) Cabaron.

“I have six candidates to be apart of this team training pool in Manila. The number one choice of the coaches is Alden Dave Cabaron,” Acaylar said.
Upon learning about the development, the 19-year-old Cabaron was grateful he was able to do well in the tryouts.

“My goal was just to do my best to make it in the tryouts since it has been my dream to be in the national team,” Cabaron said.

Aside from Cabaron, Acaylar also named SWU’s John Eduard Carascal, John Kenneth Sarcena of the University of San Carlos, Alastair Gairanod and Owen Belen of the University of San Jose-Recoletos and John Mark Pacquiao of the Cebu Institute of Technology – University.

But Acaylar said he will just be picking at least three players from Cebu for the National team.

In the distaff side, women’s mentor Francis Vicente liked what he saw in yesterday’s tryouts but he has yet to divulge who among those who joined has a chance to make the pool.

“We will reevaluate and reassess if they are the players we are looking for,” Vicente said.
