WITH the police being sidelined in the war against illegal drugs, the Cebu City Jail said it may only be able to conduct one major surprise greyhound operation in a year.
Supt. Jessie Calumpang, Cebu City Jail Warden, said their limited resources and 132 personnel including himself cannot conduct regular greyhound operations in the jail facility that is occupied by 4,136 inmates.
“Ganahan unti mi one-time, big-time same last year nga greyhound operations (We want a one-time, big-time greyhound operation just like last year),” Calumpang said.
In August last year, the Police Regional Office and the regional Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA-7) conducted a surprise greyhound operation at the Cebu City Jail that resulted in the confiscation of more than P4 million in cash, luxury goods and illegal drugs.
“The police cannot join the greyhound operations. If they will join the operation, they are only allowed within the parameters,” Calumpang said.
If the police cannot spare them personnel, Calumpang doubts if PDEA can offer them aid.
“We’ll ask assistance from other jail facilities if ever we do decide to conduct greyhound operations at the jail,” he said.
