Ten child-caring agencies attended the opening salvo of the Adoption Consciousness Week celebration last February 11.

The weeklong celebration started with a motorcade along the major thoroughfares of Cebu City and culminated with a program held at SM City Cebu Event Center.

This year’s celebration, which carries the theme “Pagmamahal Palaganapin, Legal na Pag-aampon Ating Gawin! (Spread Unconditional Love through Legal Adoption),” aims to promote legal adoption as a means of providing compassion and unconditional love to abandoned, neglected and surrendered children.

Moreover, the celebration also encourages families to undergo legal adoption in order to protect the welfare of adopted children and ensure that their rights are same with that of biological children.

The Albert Schweitzer Familienwerk Foundation, Inc., Asilo dela Milagrosa, Children’s Shelter of Cebu, Children of Cebu Foundation Inc. (Pari-an Drop in Center), Norfil Foundation Inc., SOS Children’s Village of Cebu Inc., My Bonita Home for Girls, Mercy in Action, Younglife Foundation Inc. and DSWD’s Reception and Study Center for Children participated in the activity.

The Central Visayas Adoptive Parents Association also joined the event.

During the program, children showcased their talents in singing and dancing.

Mr. and Mrs. German and Carmel Desuyo, adoptive parents, rendered a song entitled “For My Baby” and dedicate it to their four-year-old daughter, Therese Anne.

According to German Desuyo, their daughter brings joy to their family.

“Adoption is a journey of faith and love. It took time, but the love arrived instantly. It is visible gospel, from beginning to end,” added German.

Other activities included talent showcase last February 16 at the Asilo dela Milagrosa and adoption help desk at SM City Cebu, SM City Consolacion and SM Seaside City Cebu from February 18 to 19.

Social workers assigned in the adoption help desk explained the legal adoption process to couples and individuals who were interested to adopt a child.

The culminating activity was held on February 18 at the International Eucharistic Congress Pavilion in Barangay Mabolo. Cebu City. /PR
