Ex-Warrior’s free throw lift Mustangs

FORMER University of San Carlos Warrior Paul Joven displayed calm under pressure as he hit a free-throw with two seconds remaining to lift the Mustangs past the Scorpions, 104-103, in overtime in the Cebu Weekend Ballers Club tournament last weekend at the City Sports Club Cebu basketball courts.

Tied at 103 with just seconds remaining in the game, Joven stripped his fellow USC alum, Miko Santos, and got fouled. With the Scorpions already in the penalty, Joven stepped to the line and missed the first before redeeming himself by swishing the second to give the Mustangs the win.

Chase Cokaliong led the Mustangs with 31 points, including a clutch triple that tied the count at 103-all with under a minute remaining in overtime. Joven added eight assists and three steals.

Meanwhile, in other games, the Pandas got 24 points from Ryan Miano to beat the Hogs, 85-78, while Cromwel Lucena tallied 21 to lead the Roosters past the Toros, 73-67. The Parrots, behind the 30 markers of Syv Millevo, pounded the Gorillas, 82-74, while the Bulldogs crushed the Cobras, 72-58.

The Bears on the other hand, eked past the Tigers, 81-78, as former Southwestern University guard Francis Ortega waxed hot with 30 points. The Mantis prevailed over the Dragons, 75-62, while the Penguins downed the Pythons, 78-73.
