Cash-rich Governor’s Cup U-21 basketball tournament to start April 1 at Cebu Coliseum
With huge cash prizes at stake, the Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities U21 Basketball Tournament is ready to take off.
After yesterday’s coordination meeting, it was finalized that the league will start on April 1 at the Cebu Coliseum.
Lawyer Ramil Abing, executive director of Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC), said a total of 24 teams have confirmed participation.
Participating teams were supposed to submit their lineups yesterday but the deadline was moved to March 12 as more teams are interested to join, said Abing.
The tournament will feature teams coming from Cebu’s component cities and municipalities. The teams will be divided into two groups — the South and North divisions.
The tournament will exclusively showcase homegrown talents as teams will not be allowed to field in imports.
“We are very excited for this tournament, which is the first of its kind in Cebu,” said Abing.
Two games will be played during the opening day, which will be graced by Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III.
Pilar will take on Tudela in the opening game under the North Division, while the South Division duel will pit Argao against Boljoon.
“It will be an elaborate opening ceremony. There will be a parade of teams and best muse competition,” said Abing.
Mayors and officials of the competing teams will be invited to attend the opening, said Abing.
Huge cash prizes await top finishers.
The number one team in each division after the elimination round will get P20,000. The number two team will get P15,000, while the third-ranked squad will pocket P10,000.
The two semifinalists will again bring home cash prizes with the number one seed getting P30,000 and the number two receiving P20,000.
A total of P800,000 will then be at stake in the championship round.
Champion squad will receive P500,000, while the runner-up will get P300,000.
