MILITANT group Sanlakas has scheduled a climate walk next week from Toledo City to Cebu City to voice their opposition to the proposed coal-fired power plant in Barangay Sawang Calero, Cebu City.
Teody Navea, secretary general of Sanlakas, said the climate walk will kick off in Toledo City at around 7 a.m. of March 16. The group will take a 32-kilometer walk from Toledo to Naga City before spending the night at the St. Francis of Assisi church.
On the second day, March 17, Sanlakas members are expected to continue walking towards Cebu City for their protest rally at a site in Barangay Sawang Calero where the proposed coal-fired power plant would be constructed.
Afterwards, the group will proceed to the Cebu City Hall grounds for the culmination of their climate walk. “We will read the environmental violations during the culmination. We are addressing this call to our local and national government,” he said.
“We would like to protect the environment from the coal plants,” Navea told Cebu Daily News.
Environmentalists and other militant groups, including Sanlakas, has been opposing the planned construction of 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Barangay Sawang Calero.
Around 300 members from Sanlakas are expected to join the two-day walk.
