DepEd opens early school listup

THE Department of Education (DepEd) yesterday started the early enrollment for children entering Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2 when schools open in June.

Regional DepEd Director Carmelita Dulangon said the advance list-up is meant to help them determine the number of students who will report to school in June so they can prepare classrooms, seats and learning materials way ahead of time.

“There are parents who are not keen about dates. There are those who enroll their kids on the first day of classes and I hope they won’t do it again this year,” she said.

The DepEd earlier set Jan. 25 as the date for early registration in all public elementary and secondary schools nationwide.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said if the school heads know how many students they will have ahead of time, they can better prepare classrooms and seats and learning materials.

Their target for early registration include five-year-old children to ensure their enrollment in kindergarten.

Dulangon said they already have data on the number of students in Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 in the previous school year.

Most likely, they will have similar numbers in the next school year, she said.

Dulangon said the regular enrollment dates during summer shall continue.

“I would like to thank the parents who availed of the early enrollment for their kids. At least, we will know what to prepare for the start of classes in June,” she told reporters yesterday.
