THE public is encouraged to bring umbrellas and rain gear during the weekend as the weather bureau has forecast light to moderate rains in Cebu with the expected entry of a low pressure area (LPA) in the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) today.

Alfredo Quiblat Jr., chief for Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Mactan, said the LPA might cross to the Visayas or Mindanao areas.

“We are still monitoring in which areas this LPA might affect,” Quiblat told Cebu Daily News.

As of 6 p.m. yesterday, the LPA was in southeast Mindanao and was outside PAR.

Quiblat, however, said that there is also the low chance of the LPA becoming a tropical cyclone or it may also dissipate.

Despite the forecast of rains over the weekend, Pagasa Mactan has not issued any color-coded rainfall advisories for Cebu.

“What we just issued is light to moderate rains for Cebu,” he said.

According to the Pagasa website, for light rains, there is less than 2.5 millimeters of rain within two hours.

For moderate rains, there is 2.5 to 7.55 millimeters of rain within the next two hours.
